Whatever your aspiration in tench fishing we love to fulfil your fishing dream. Tench
and Norfolk have always been synonymous. Back in the 70s, the most famous tench water
in the country, The Marsh, was discovered and many similar estate lakes still hold
Recently, though, the gravel pits have taken pride of place and John’s record of
eighteen tench over nine pounds in the last three years is quite extraordinary. Most
years now, he and his clients catch literally scores of tench over eight pounds in
weight through the months of March, April and May.
The high summer and the autumn see a turn down in numbers but the methods are often
more attractive. Now, John turns to margin fishing, stalking fish, looking for bubbling
fish, big bags aren’t taken as frequently but the fight of tench close-in on a thirteen
foot float rod really is extraordinarily exhilarating.
John has access to eight private pits and lakes where tench fishing is amazing. These
are beautiful, serene waters exclusively retained for Angling Travel clients. Here
you won’t have to battle for swims or worry about competition from any other anglers.
This is the tench fishing that we all dream of. Big fish. Serene waters. Peaceful,
misty dawns. The idyll really can come true. For you.
You will experience fishing action and excitement, laughter, an adventure to remember
forever. Waters that are idyllic, private, away from the madding crowds. We cannot
guarantee particular catches but John seems to make fishing magic happen with great

Why would you fish with John Bailey?
John is a great fishing companion, inspiring, great fun, extremely knowledgeable
and so keen for people to love their days fishing. He knows the rivers and lakes
intimately so you have the very best chance of success John enjoys your success more
than his own! Whether you are an advanced fisherman, a total beginner, somewhere
in between, or buying a present for a loved one, we will create and look after your
precious time, energy and hope.
2016 was an extraordinary year for John’s Angling Travel tench fishing guests. Considering
the ever-variable conditions throughout April, May and June, the tench just keep
coming! In those three months, a total of 418 tench were caught to fifty-two rods
on six different lakes. That is an average of approaching eight tench per session,
pretty phenomenal when you consider that virtually all the anglers elected to fish
with a float and close-in. In fact, John says he cannot remember the last guy who
actually wanted to fish feeders and buzzers at range. That’s always an option, of
course, but float fishing is so immediate and up close that is how most people want
to take their tench.
‘Of course, if you are fishing just the one float rod, it makes preparation for the
trip so much easier, too. Any reasonably soft-action rod between twelve and fifteen
feet is fine and either a pin or a fixed spool reel with five or six pound line completes
the package. A few floats, hooks, shot and bait and you’re there. And as for bait,
not much more is needed than sweetcorn and some soft pellets for the hook. Most of
the swims tend to be between seven and nine feet deep so you can even set up a waggler
before you arrive!’
We arrange a private call for you with John and you get all the pre-trip advice &
information you need to prepare. call 01452 813241 or 07866 470238 to book your place
or email joy2AT(curly a)angling-travel.comWe also recommend bringing your friends
or family. There are plenty of swims big enough for 2 or even 3 anglers. Taking convivial
breaks to toast the tench is part of the fun!
“I enjoyed the beautiful setting and learning a new fishing technique from a real
enthusiast” Paul Chubbuck, Cambridge
“I think John wanted me to catch a barbel more than I did !! Knowledge was brilliant.
A real eye opener” Ian Flanders, London
every thing was spot on. John put me on a beautiful secluded water where there was
every chance of a really huge fish, which is what I asked of him. As I always say
“every dog has his day”, & next time it may be my day!.Andy Sage
“The tremendous fishing on the Wye was near to perfect from my point of view…John
was extraordinarily patient and persevered with me, with the result that I succeeded.
I learnt so much about barbel techniques that I know will enable me to fish more
confidently in the future. I also want to thank you for enabling me to fish such
tremendous swims where the fishing and surroundings were exceptional…I also valued
your emphasis on how to care for fish which is so important for the future...looking
forward to joining you again next year” Terry Scragg, Arundel
“I enjoyed the day enormously, and it also made me focus on various aspects of my
fishing which I am sure will pay off in the future. Second time (for me -- third
for JP) meant that we got going quicker and used JB more effectively. We ended up
staying on one stretch of the River which meant that we maximised the time available
to us. Hotel continues to be just the ticket. The last few weeks of the Season might
be the time to return, so we will see...” Simon Clark, Little Berkhamsted
